Anxiety & Overthinking

Anxiety Therapy in Virginia Beach

Experiential, mindfulness-based therapy for anxiety, overthinking, and a nervous system that never quite powers down. In person in Virginia Beach and by telehealth across Virginia.

Why understanding your anxiety isn't enough

Most people who come to me for anxiety already know a great deal about it. They can name their triggers, trace the patterns back years, and explain exactly why the worry doesn't make sense. And they're still anxious.

That's because anxiety isn't primarily a thinking problem. It's a protective response that lives in the body — in breath, muscle tension, and a nervous system that learned to stay ready. You can't reason a braced body into relaxing, which is why insight alone so often stalls.

So the work here is experiential. We slow down enough for you to notice what anxiety actually feels like, practice new responses in real time, and give your system repeated experiences of safety instead of another explanation. Over time, anxiety stops running the show — not because you defeated it, but because you no longer have to fight it.

Who This Is For

You might recognize some of this

  • A mind that won't stop replaying conversations, decisions, or worst-case scenarios
  • High-functioning anxiety — you're performing well and exhausted underneath
  • Physical symptoms: tight chest, shallow breath, clenched jaw, restless sleep
  • Panic that arrives without an obvious trigger
  • Knowing exactly why you're anxious and still not feeling better
  • Relaxing feels uncomfortable, unproductive, or unsafe

How I Work

An integrative approach to anxiety

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Instead of arguing with anxious thoughts, we change your relationship to them. ACT is well-researched for anxiety and focuses on flexibility rather than thought control.

Nervous system regulation

Anxiety lives in the body. Breath, grounding, and gentle somatic awareness help your system learn that it can come down from high alert.

Compassion Focused Therapy

Much anxiety is fueled by self-criticism and pressure. CFT builds an internal tone that soothes rather than escalates.

Experiential, not just analytical

We practice new responses in the room rather than only discussing them. That's what makes calm something you can actually access under stress.

Serving Virginia Beach and Hampton Roads

Inner Peace Counseling serves clients throughout Virginia Beach and the surrounding Hampton Roads area, including Norfolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Newport News. Telehealth sessions are available anywhere in Virginia, which many clients prefer over driving through tunnel traffic after work.

As a military-connected community, Hampton Roads brings its own kinds of stress: deployments, frequent moves, and long stretches of holding everything together. Military members, veterans, and spouses are welcome here, and a certified out-of-network TRICARE option is available.
